A Few of My Favorite Things About a Career in Marketing
A career in marketing is fun and exciting. Each day brings a new project, interaction, and challenge. In the spirit of the season, I am sharing a few of my favorite things about working in the marketing field.
Seeing Your Ideas Come to Life
Whether it’s a marketing campaign, digital ad, annual report, or a content strategy, seeing your ideas and projects come to life is so much fun and very rewarding. Just because I am a marketing professional doesn’t mean I have instant ideas when tasked with a project. At Chartwell, we typically start with a team brainstorm which allows us to be creative and feed off one another. Often, the final product is a combination of ideas from many of us. We have an amazingly talented and creative team, so I love seeing the first proof show up in my inbox. Sometimes we tweak it, sometimes the idea is nailed from the beginning, but in either instance, there is great excitement when I see the concept come to life. And of course, the cherry on top is presenting the idea to the client and seeing their reaction.
Realizing the Results of Your Persistence
Media and public relations are a big part of my role at Chartwell Agency. As you may have seen in a recent vlog I recorded with my colleague Liz, public relations is much more than just sending out press releases. To get the media to pay attention to your pitches and story ideas, you must be creative, good at building relationships, and very persistent. You may pitch to a key trade publication for your client for a year before you get noticed. It takes determination. In some cases, you finally have the pitch that grabs the reporter’s attention, in other cases, the writer reaches out to you for a source because your constant communication reminds them they have a potential source on a certain topic. Sometimes you just happen to send the reporter a pitch at the very minute they are working on a story and need a source that your client is an expert in. Seeing the story hit the news or be featured in a key trade publication for one of your clients is always a great feeling.
Meeting Amazing and Interesting People
In my eight years at Chartwell Agency, I have worked with clients in many different industries from aerospace to healthcare and non-profit to technology. Not only do I get to learn about a lot of different things, but I also meet some very smart and interesting people. We care greatly about the success of our clients’ organizations and also care about them on a personal level. Clients become friends. I consider my clients a huge part of my growth as a professional because even though I am the expert in marketing, they teach me things about their field that I would likely learn about if I didn’t have them as a client.
Campaigns and branding and stories and ads, people and clients and marketing fads. These are a few of my favorite things (about a career in marketing). If your organization needs marketing support and wants to work with an amazing team of people, check us out.
